[CRAVITY/Selfies] CRAVITY’s new album [MASTER : PIECE] and behind stories | M COUNTDOWN INTERVIEW

2023.05.26

After about seven months since their release of [NEW WAVE] (2022) last fall, the nine-member boy group CRAVITY has returned. Despite their busy schedules with various contents and concerts, they have finally released their latest album [MASTER : PIECE] and ‘Groovy’. The members’ confidence is especially stronger than ever before. From explanations about their new album to cover stages and future goals, CRAVITY shared various stories with the M COUNTDOWN Magazine.

CRAVITY members who have come with their new mini album [MASTER: PIECE], please say hello to the readers of M COUNTDOWN Magazine!

Hello, M COUNTDOWN Magazine readers! We are CRAVITY, who have made a comeback with ‘Groovy’ this time!

The title of the album, which borrows the word ‘Masterpiece’ meaning a ‘great work,’ seems to show your ambition. Please give us a brief introduction to the album.

SERIM: As our team’s colors are refreshing and powerful youth, this album is also filled with this kind of vibe! In addition, we included a message that anyone, regardless of their job or position, can become the protagonist of their own life in this EP.

CRAVITY’s various looks that alternate between suits and refreshing vibes in the music video and teaser for the ‘Groovy’ have raised a lot of expectations from Luvity. If there is a point that you particularly want fans to pay attention to and enjoy in this work, what would it be?

SEONGMIN: As you can see in the music video, we wear various costumes. Therefore, I hope fans pay attention to the diverse aspects of CRAVITY, from powerful to refreshing, on stage and enjoy this ‘Groovy’ performance.

Which concept do you prefer between your refreshing outfits and suits? And if there is another outfit that you would like to show on stage, what would it be?

JUNGMO: It’s the suit! It was awkward at first for us to wear suits as our stage outfit, but our fans loved it. As for another outfit we want to show on stage, it’s the school uniform. We wore it during our ‘Adrenaline’ stage, but since there were no public broadcasts during the pandemic, we want to show it to our fans again in person this time.

What is the killing part that each CRAVITY member picked in the ‘Groovy’?

WOOBIN: Surprisingly, all members had the same opinion. We think the killing part of ‘Groovy’ is the chorus part, also known as the ‘Bicycle dance’, performed by WONJIN.

Although CRAVITY is famous for the refreshing image, your performance cannot be ignored. We are curious about the point choreography of ‘Groovy’ chosen by the team’s dance line, SERIM, WONJIN, TAEYOUNG, and HYEONGJUN.

WONJIN: The point move that we have chosen is the ‘Groovy dance’ in the chorus and the whistle choreography that appears in between. The dance moves enhance the vibe and freshness of the song!

What is the CRAVITY members’ favorite song from the new album? And can you give a reason why you recommend that song to LUVITY?

MINHEE: It’s ‘Get Lifted’! This song has a different concept from the ‘Groovy’, and I think we can show another great performance with it!

From your debut album to now, the members have continued to participate in production. In particular, SERIM and ALLEN have been consistently writing lyrics, and WOOBIN also included his own composition ‘Light the way’ in the new mini album. We would like to hear about your mindset as self-producing idols.

SERIM: In this [MASTER : PIECE] album, the members participated in five out of the six songs (‘Groovy’, ‘FLY’, ‘Get Lifted’, ‘Baddie’, ‘Light the way’). We will continue to make efforts to increase our participation in future albums, and improve the quality even more to show our growth.

In addition to ‘My Turn’, ‘Bad Habits’, and ‘Chandelier’, your label mate and senior Exy, from WJSN, also wrote the lyrics for the new track ‘A to Z’. We are curious to know which part you like the most.

TAEYOUNG: I like the part that goes, “I’m curious about your A to Z / I want to listen to it all night, talk to me.”

We would also like to hear your impressions about your recent fan concert [Dear My LUVITY], which took place last month, following your first solo concert last year.

SEONGMIN: We were truly happy to create enjoyable memories together with the cheers of LUVITY filling the concert hall in Korea. We want to accumulate our experience to show you an even more amazing performance.

To K-pop fans, CRAVITY is known as ‘COVER-VITY’ for their various cover stages. You have also performed many stages on MCountdown. Among all the covers you have done so far, what is the most memorable one?

HYEONGJUN: We covered SuperM’s song ‘Jopping,’ and I remember that many people liked the performance because we had been preparing it for a long time since we were trainees.

Then, on the other hand, we are curious to know if there is any CRAVITY song that you would like other idol teams to cover.

Allen: I would love it if other groups could cover ‘My Turn’. When people think of CRAVITY, ‘My Turn’ is often mentioned alongside ‘JUMPER.’ If other teams cover our song, I’m curious to see how they would interpret and showcase it.

As this is your comeback after a long time, we are also looking forward to the ‘Ending fairy’ that the members have prepared. Do you have any poses or expressions prepared? It would be great if you could give us your selfies!

JUNGMO: We have prepared the whistle pose, which is the point choreography of ‘Groovy’. We’ll post our selfies here for you to see.

Next month will be your 3rd debut anniversary this year. We are curious about your thoughts on your past activities and your goals for the future.

WOOBIN: Half of the three years since our debut have been filled with moments of regret as we couldn’t meet many fans due to COVID-19. Our goal going forward remains the same : For our loving fans, we will always strive and work harder to become the best performers on stage.
