EXO’s KAI, who has always presented different sides with every solo performance, has returned to the music scene as a ‘rover’. We, the MCountdown magazine, had a conversation with KAI about his third mini album, [Rover], which was unveiled this month. If there is anyone who wants to teleport into KAI’s mind, please pay attention to this interview.
KAI has made a comeback after 1 year and 4 months! KAI, please say hello first to the readers of MCOUNTDOWN Magazine.
I’m Mr. Rover… Hello, this is KAI who has returned with the mini album ‘Rover’!
Your solo debut album [KAI] and [Peaches] were both released during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s been quite a while since you met EXO-Ls in person on MCountdown, so it must be an unforgettable moment for you.
Almost everything in MCOUNTDOWN, from the parking lot to the waiting room and the stage, was the same as before, so it brought back vivid memories. Moreover, since this is my first solo stage to receive support from fans on a music show, it was even more memorable for me. Perhaps because I have good memories of my first stage with ‘Rover’, I’m really enjoying the new album’s campaign overall as well
Which part of ‘Rover’ did you particularly focus on while working on it?
I think I put the most effort into maintaining the mindset of “Let’s enjoy it”. I usually experience various concerns and emotions when working on an album, but with this album, I tried to enjoy the process by doing what I wanted to do. I hope you also feel that kind of joyful emotion that I did.
We also look forward to KAI’s performance. Could you please list some points that you think would be good to focus on when watching the ‘Rover’ stage?
Please focus on the performance that comes with the addictive melody of the chorus when you watch the stage. The highlight performance that continues into the chorus from the last bridge in the song is also impressive.
As this is your third solo album, your ambition as an artist may have grown even more. While preparing for this album [Rover], have you also thought about other areas you want to challenge yourself in?
My ambition has grown, but I have also learned to let go of some things. I have realized the importance of trusting the staffs I work with. Instead of challenging myself in new areas, I want to always show a great performance as a player on stage.
We’re curious about what ideas you contributed to the overall production of the album.
I came up with ideas for almost everything that makes up the album, and based on them, I worked with the staff members through several meetings to create it together. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, it seems like this wonderful outcome has been created.
Your previous solo album [KAI] showed restrained charm, and [Peaches] showcased a dreamy and sweet image. Your albums always had a clear emphasis on the vibe that you pursue. And your new song ‘Rover’ has a rhythmical and hip mood. What is your secret to embodying different concepts in each album?
One of the biggest advantages of this job that I love is that I can transform into something else. Therefore, I can embody all concepts and challenge myself without feeling burdened or awkward about change. I will try my best to show you various concepts and moods and always strive to approach you in a new way.
The keyword of this album, ‘Rover’, also conveys the feeling of encompassing your solo career so far, which is remarkable for you changing concepts distinctly each time. So, where is your desired destination for the next album? Please feel free to share regardless of music or image.
My destination is always the same. Right beside you! I may wander freely like a ‘Rover’ with various albums and concepts, but ultimately, I want to be in your hearts. It may seem like I’m the freest and want to go anywhere, but my sincere heart always stays in one place.
In [Rover], there are six tracks in total. We’re curious about which song, aside from the title track, is your favorite. We also want to know the reason.
I really love all the songs, but it varies depending on my mood at the moment. Today, I’m drawn to ‘Bomba’. This song was also a candidate for the title track, and it is a song that I chose with a challenging mindset. It’s a really exciting and danceable song.
EXO members’ reaction video for the music video was also released. It seemed like you and the members still have a close relationship. Were there any memorable moments of support from the members during the preparation of this album?
I remember that everyone said that looked good and that my performance was great. And Suho and Xiumin also did the ‘Rover’ challenge with me, so I was really grateful!
Your solo projects, including the latest one, [Rover], make a total of three albums, which is not a small number. We are curious about the differences you feel between when you first debuted solo and now.
I think mindset is important. Enjoy and be happy! Other than that, the stage always makes me excited and fun. It’s always the same.
What was the most memorable and overwhelming moment for you during your solo career?
The recent performance on M COUNTDOWN is memorable. It’s been a while since the last time I came to M COUNTDOWN and heard the cheers from the fans who I really missed… Those memories are really precious to me.
Next month will mark the 11th anniversary of EXO’s debut. It must be a memorable moment for you, could you share a few words about it?
11th anniversary is a long time, but maybe because I always spend it with you, feeling excited and happy, it doesn’t feel like such a long time has passed. The time spent with EXO-Ls always feels short. Let’s always be together!
