[MIYEON/Selfies] The last moment with M COUNTDOWN, Miyeon's special stage <How To Love> | M COUNTDOWN INTERVIEW

2023.11.23

We're at the crossroads of a heartfelt farewell. After an impressive stint of 1,000 days, MIYEON from (G)I-DLE is taking her final bow as the MC of M COUNTDOWN. To mark this milestone, M COUNTDOWN Magazine has curated an exclusive interview to celebrate her journey. As one of the longest-serving MCs, MIYEON not only left a mark but also a special gift for M COUNTDOWN. We explored both the nostalgic journey and the exciting future that lies ahead for MIYEON, sharing in-depth and meaningful conversations with her.

You've been the longest-serving MC in M COUNTDOWN history. Although it's truly regrettable, could you share your thoughts on your time with M COUNTDOWN with the viewers?

From day one as an MC to now, spanning an incredible 1,002 days, it's been an unreal journey filled with daily excitement and joy. Every Thursday, like our viewers anticipating their beloved artists' performances, I too was thrilled to be part of it. Sharing the stage with amazing artists and talking about their passionately crafted albums was a heartwarming and gratifying experience, both as an artist and as an MC.

I used to think goodbyes were always sad, but this departure feels different. It's more about gratitude than regret because I poured my heart and love into every moment. The love I've received is overwhelming and humbling.☺️ It's helped me grow and flourish within M COUNTDOWN. I've learned to smile and part ways with love, thanks to the mutual affection we shared. (laughs)

As I look back on these warm 1,002 days, I wish M COUNTDOWN continues to be a beacon of joy and greetings. A huge thanks to all the viewers who have shown love to MC MIYEON. Please continue to watch over and support me in my future ventures.

Reaching a milestone of 1,000 days as an MC is no small achievement. What's your secret to sustaining this role for so long?

I've said this in the past, but being an MC for such an extended period isn't something I could've managed solo. The secret sauce? Definitely the unwavering love and support I've received. Being diligent and consistent might not always align with my nature, but the continuous warmth and encouragement I got, even when I faltered, played a huge role in my growth. This journey of evolving and feeling a sense of responsibility has made me eagerly anticipate every Thursday. My ability to host with endless enthusiasm week after week is all thanks to the incredible love from all of you. My time at M COUNTDOWN has been a period of learning and personal growth, and I'm elated to have uncovered new sides of myself. A heartfelt thanks once more.

You've partnered with three MCs during your time: NAM YOONSOO, JOOHEON (MONSTA X), and SUNG HANBIN (ZEROBASEONE). Could you share a little praise relay for each of them from your experience co-hosting M COUNTDOWN?

MIYEON → NAM YOONSOO: YOONSOO, who embarked on this rookie journey with me! I'm so grateful for your earnest approach every step of the way, it was truly reassuring. In those early days, when the MC spot still felt new and nerve-wracking, I remember how the writers boosted our confidence with their encouragement and heaps of praise. YOONSOO's unique charm often brought laughter to everyone, and I fondly remember us growing together, bit by bit, every week.

MIYEON → JOOHEON (MONSTA X): JOOHEON had this amazing ability to lighten up and ease the atmosphere, even in moments that could be tense, creating an enjoyable environment for everyone. I'm so thankful for his thoughtful considerations and efforts. I've admired many things about him. His constant lively and positive energy made every Thursday a joy, and his leadership was something I greatly relied on.

MIYEON → SUNG HANBIN(ZEROBASEONE): From the very first day, HANBIN was so flawless in his role as an MC that it was hard to believe it was his first time. Seeing him do so well was a joy for me, as if it were my own achievement. I was quite nervous and stiff at the beginning, so I had my regrets, but HANBIN confidently and impressively managed right from the start. I was happy and felt secure throughout our time together. I believe he'll continue to be an even more incredible MC..

You once had the unique experience of presenting a first-place trophy to your group, (G)I-DLE, on M COUNTDOWN. Could you share your feelings about this unforgettable moment?

Being part of M COUNTDOWN every week, introducing talented artists, and awarding the number one trophy is always delightful, especially when I'm there with my dear group members. The moment I announced (G)I-DLE as the first-place winners and handed them the trophy was filled with a flood of happy memories and deep gratitude. It's a moment that will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Reflecting on your journey from your debut as an MC to your final broadcast, is there any particular message of encouragement from the (G)I-DLE members that resonated with you?

Throughout my time as an MC, my members were always there, offering their support and encouragement. One recent memory that lingers is a call from YUQI after my last show. Hearing her say ‘You did great, you've worked hard’ was incredibly touching and heartfelt. I'm so thankful for my members, who always show such empathy and treat my endeavors as if they were their own.

In 2022, you released your first mini-album [MY] and stepped onto the M COUNTDOWN stage as a solo artist. From your experience, what differences have you felt between working as part of a team and as an individual artist?

Being part of (G)I-DLE, I've experienced the thrill of the stage countless times with other members. But my debut as a solo artist on stage felt like entering an entirely new realm – it was both strange and exhilarating. That first solo performance, fueled by a desire to cast aside fears and anxieties to deliver a message of heartfelt warmth, turned out to be more of a healing journey for me than just a performance.

On the other hand, performing with (G)I-DLE, where we bring to life invigorating performances and convey our messages as young women, is always an electrifying and joyous experience. The collective energy and the sense of achievement in creating something unique with the other four members offer a fulfilling experience that solo endeavors just can't match.

Though there are many differences, it's like experiencing the contrasting sensations of a hot and cold bath - each distinct in its allure and appeal. (laughs)

You've prepared a special stage to commemorate your final moment. Could you share with us the song you'll perform and why you chose it?

Around the time I started as an MC on M COUNTDOWN, I was also embracing new challenges. The song I'll perform is actually an OST from my first foray into acting in a web drama. This song captures the essence of new beginnings and the excitement of that time. I chose it to reflect on the beautiful beginnings and happy memories, signifying another fresh start as I say goodbye.

In your tenure as an MC on M COUNTDOWN, you've showcased a variety of special performances. Which one stands out the most to you?

All stages held their own charm and are unforgettable, but the performance that lingers in my heart is 'The Way Heart Connects' from my last day as MC. Singing and connecting with our fandom, NEVERLAND, brought an outpouring of genuine love and emotion. Also, the surprise airplane letter event from the fans, which was unbeknownst to me, is a memory I cherish deeply.

From your perspective as an MC, what unique experiences did M COUNTDOWN offer?

There are so many: Studio M, History M, vocal challenges, exclusive debut performances, and stunning VCRs. It was exciting to see rookie artists join as special MCs, revealing their unique charms, among other diverse events and sights on the show.

It was always touching to see the effort made to ensure every artist shines in their space and that the viewers could engage fully with these brilliant artists. As a performer myself, I found this incredibly heartwarming and inspiring.

Do you have any unique pre-show rituals you do before each live broadcast?

For live shows, I always double down on rehearsing my lines to avoid any slip-ups. While I don’t have a specific routine, the energy and cheers from our fans watching in front give me a great start. (laughs)

Are there any funny mishaps or delightful behind-the-scenes moments from your time as an MC that you remember fondly?

One unforgettable incident was when Jungkook’s first-place trophy unexpectedly came apart. Also, when I first began hosting, the awkwardness of handing over the trophy to artists who were also first-time winners was quite a scene. We were both newbies at it, leading to some awkward yet memorable moments.

Looking ahead, what can we expect from you? If you were to embark on your second solo project, what kind of stage would you envision presenting on M COUNTDOWN?

We’re currently prepping to connect with NEVERLAND more towards the year's end through various performances. We're all brainstorming on how to bring a fresh and exciting twist to my next activities. As for my second solo venture, I haven't nailed down the details yet. It could be a soul-stirring ballad, R&B, or maybe even an uplifting track with comforting lyrics. There’s a whirlwind of ideas, but one thing's for sure – if there’s a second solo album, it has to debut on M COUNTDOWN. (laughs) Look forward to it.

Could you leave a message for your last partner MC, SUNG HANBIN (ZEROBASEONE)?

HANBIN, right from the start, was absolutely fantastic at hosting. It’s thrilling to think how much more he will evolve. Despite being new, he was remarkable for his calm and composed demeanor. His flawless execution clearly showed the effort and dedication he invested. Our time together was brief but filled with positive vibes. Thanks a ton. I'm rooting for HANBIN in all his endeavors. Rock it!!!! Take great care of the MC position at M COUNTDOWN. (laughs)

Do you have any advice or a special message for your successor as the MC of M COUNTDOWN?

I'm confident that HANBIN will be a great mentor to the next MC, given how well he's been doing! My biggest tip would be to enjoy and have fun together – that’s key to a great show.

M COUNTDOWN is like a weekly festival with its stunning stages, fabulous music, incredible artists, and supportive fans. The role of an MC, I believe, is to make sure everyone partakes in this celebration. I’m certain the new MC will infuse M COUNTDOWN with new energy and lead it enthusiastically. Can’t wait to see it and I’m cheering you on all the way.

It must be particularly hard for NEVERLAND, as well as the viewers, to say goodbye. Could you share a few words with your fans who have always been there for you?

Yes, definitely. (laughs) Our NEVERLAND has always cherished M COUNTDOWN, which allowed me to stay close to them even during hiatus periods. Being an MC meant I could connect with NEVERLAND weekly, a happiness shared by both of us.

M COUNTDOWN has been a bridge between me, NEVERLAND, and (G)I-DLE, creating so many precious memories. The farewell might leave a sense of emptiness, but let’s view it as a fresh start. I’m excited to show you more of the amazing things I've received from this platform. So stay tuned and keep supporting me. Much love and gratitude to you, NEVERLAND! And a heartfelt thank you to M COUNTDOWN, which holds a special place for both NEVERLAND and me. ❤
